All living organisms on earth are found within a thin envelope of a few kilometers covering our planet, called the biosphere. With the energy of the sun the first bacteria and plants have created an atmosphere containing oxygen and other gases that make more complex forms of live possible, including human beings.
The web of life that spans the earth can be seen as a living organism, Gaia: interconnected systems of air, water, and a rocky surface, teeming with life in every nook and cranny. A great disturbance of the major systems: atmosphere (climate change), forests & oceans (loss of biodiversity), will change the conditions for survival of many species and may cause the most complex and vulnerable species to go extinct forever.
